About Dustcollectors:

The Dustcollectors are inspired by objects and shapes who at first hand have an dual us-aged; function and decoration. When this function disappears it becomes a non-product, taking space!

Just like the classical vases you normally see on antique cupboards and mantelpieces. They have the vase function but are hardly never used that way. They are status symbols of the past and used as decoration. There real function switched to collecting-dust and being beautiful memory keepers of the past.

So why not be honest and make them totally decoration and dust-collecting?!

The handmade pieces are made of mixed colloured resin; drawning open structures and decoration in one. This makes every dustcollector unique and one of a kind.

QUEST Project: Smith of Derby ; the future of time.

Collaboration: Sebastiaan Straatsma & Ursula Lavrencic

In our Quest for time we came to the conclusion that time is what we make of it ourselves. It’s relative. It is a personal “moment” between a starting point and an end. It deals with movement and experience. It's a fragment of time that sticks out and is made valuable by taking the time for it and pointing it out. It is about giving back the fascination and magic that times has within itself.

For the Smith of Derby company we came to the conclusion that this time fascination and magic was lost and distracted by the appearances of the different clocks and time-projects; the packing. But the quality of the company is the specialism and accuracy of the mechanisms itself; the inside and not the outside. We wanted to give back the experience of time by creating “objects of time”.

These objects are designed to bring back the fascination and alternative usage of time. They can be used to tricker clients and help explain where the company stands for. (Time Tools). They can give direction on how time can be used in different ways and become company icons.

Performance; Object of time:

-On screen: Time bar.
-Time bar starts.
-There is little wooden-box on the table.
-Inside: a black ball and a silver key
-The ball is winded; movement and clicking sound
-The ball starts ticking.
-The ball is passed out through the crowd.
-Taking the time ….. taking moment......

RELATIVE TIME BRACELET

Relative time is about time fragments. About periods of personal time. About the ever changing relationship of three moments; one in past, one in future and the present moment. The meaning of Relative Time Bracelet is hidden and only understandable to the owner. It's intimate. It's a jewelry to visualize private timeline. With mobile phone via Blue Tooth the owner choses his fragment. It can be a period from his birthday to his next birthday - his own personal year. It can be time from sunrise to sunset. It can be a time fragment he takes to give a speech, have lunch or make love to his girlfriend.

Relative Time Bracelet is a simple object that represents time in a human, not physical way. Where time is mysterious and ungraspable. Sometimes slow and sometimes fast, but always meaningful.

Smiths of Derby have been producing devices to measure absolute time for one and a half century. In the course of years, the precision they can achieve went far beyond the capacity of human perception. As they are now entering the market of art and design we believe a truly different perspective on time and it's representations would enable them to win a respected and valued market position of their company.
